About Electrostatic

Electrostatic refinishing using the “completely airless” Ransburg #2 Handgun is absolutely the cleanest, most efficient method ever developed for on-site coating applications. It uses no forced air pressure to blow the paint from the gun, but instead uses electricity to pull the paint from the gun directly to the surface that is being painted.

Ransburg No. 2 Electrostatic Handgun

Developed in Germany over 50 years ago, the first electrostatic painting systems were large stationary units. Over time, it’s been redesigned and improved into the portable unit that we use today. Using the positive/negative attraction of magnetism is the secret of electrostatic painting.

Using this highly sophisticated application system, the paint is fed to the end of the handgun and onto a rotating bell shape. As the bell turns, the paint is moved to the outer edge where it picks up a positive electrical charge. When the paint particles leave the bell, it carries that positive charge with it.

The charged paint droplets are then pulled, by magnetic attraction to the negatively grounded item being painted. The paint will actually pull around corners and to the backside of the work piece. This system enables us to have virtually no overspray to the surrounding area.

By moving the handgun along and around the item, the operator can apply a consistent even coating to all sides, while eliminating heavy areas and sags to produce a high quality, smooth coating comparable to a factory finish.

More than just a beautiful, factory like finish, the coatings that Harris Coating Systems electrostatically applies have been proven to be among the toughest, most durable finishes available in the on-site refinishing market today.

The Harris advantage

Electrostatic Refinishing with the Ransburg No. 2

We refinish on site using the Ransburg No. 2 electrostatic hand gun—the industry icon for precision metal finishing. It produces exceptionally fine atomization and ~95% transfer efficiency, meaning dramatically less overspray and cleaner job sites—even around live tenants and sensitive finishes. The result is a uniform, wrapped-around film build on complex profiles that looks and wears like it came from the factory.

What you can expect

  • Factory-like finish on aluminum mullions, doors, and frames—refreshed color and gloss with excellent edge coverage on intricate sections.

  • Minimal disruption: High transfer efficiency = cleaner application and shorter shutdowns for entries and ground-floor suites.

  • Material efficiency & fewer emissions: With far higher transfer than conventional spray, electrostatic methods reduce paint waste and help lower VOCs released into the air (especially when paired with compliant coatings.

  • Heritage of reliability: The No. 2 process has been the electrostatic workhorse for decades, refined specifically for consistent, high-quality results on metal substrates.

Interior Applications

BeforeBeforeAfter
BeforeAfter

For interior applications we use a high performance, two component, polyamide epoxy known for its excellent chemical resistance and durability. Containing no polyisocyanates, and a moderately low VOC rating, this coating is ideal for interior applications where a tough, factory like finish is required.

For more than 40 years Harris Coating Systems has been refinishing filing cabinets, elevator openings, washroom partitions and fire doors, all on-site. As we do a lot of repeat business, quite often we’ll return to a client’s office only to find the cabinets we painted for them years ago still looking like brand new!

Exterior Applications

Our exterior coating is a two component acrylic urethane that offers exceptional gloss retention and weatherability equal to 3 or 4 times that of conventional high-grade enamel. An extremely tough coating, it is resistant to UV rays, gasoline, and hydraulic fluids. This coating has a heat resistance up to 300° F and is ideal for exterior applications where severe weather and corrosive conditions exist.

Both of our coatings are specially formulated for application with the completely airless Ransburg #2 electrostatic handgun.
